How to choose the right size for a men's bracelet: a practical guide

How to measure your wrist to choose the right men's bracelet size. A practical guide with a DIY method, size chart and tips to avoid mistakes when buying online.

Getting the bracelet size wrong is the number one fear for anyone buying online. A bracelet that's too tight is uncomfortable. A bracelet that's too loose slides off. The right size should sit halfway between security and movement.

The good news: measuring your wrist correctly only requires a string and a ruler. Nothing complicated.

How to measure your wrist

There are two methods: both lead to the same result.

Method 1: The string

Take a piece of cotton thread or a string. Wrap the string around your wrist, at the point where you normally wear bracelets. Not too tight, the string should touch the skin but not press into it. Mark the point where the string overlaps itself with a pen.

Now lay the string on a ruler and measure it, that's the circumference of your wrist. Write it down.

Method 2: Tailor's tape measure

If you have a tailor's tape measure at home, it's even simpler. Wrap it around your wrist at the same point, read the number. That's the circumference.

Where exactly to measure

Always above the protruding wrist bone, the one you feel if you move your fist up and down. It's the point where the bracelet will rest.

From wrist measurement to bracelet size

Once you know your wrist circumference, add some room for movement.

If your wrist measures 17 cm: add 1-2 cm for a comfortable yet secure fit. The size to order is 18-19 cm. If you prefer a looser fit add 2-3 cm, the size is 19-20 cm.

The general rule: not adding the extra centimeters increases the risk that the bracelet fits just right, meaning too tight, since the wrist is always in motion. More than 3 cm means a risk it will slide off.

The difference between rigid and soft bracelets in choosing your size

The rigid bracelet follows a different logic.

You can't slide it on from underneath your hand like an elastic bracelet. You have to pass it over the back of your hand, which means your hand needs to slip through. This requires more room.

If your wrist is 17 cm, but the back of your hand is wider (say 8-9 cm wide) the rigid bracelet must be large enough to let your hand pass through. Add 2-3 cm to the wrist measurement, not 1-2 cm.

The soft bracelet, on the other hand, has more tolerance. If it has a clasp or is elastic, wrist measurement + 1 cm is generally enough.

Approximate men's bracelet size chart

Wrist circumference → recommended size:

  • 16-17 cm wrist → size 17-18 cm
  • 17-18 cm wrist → size 18-19 cm
  • 18-19 cm wrist → size 19-20 cm
  • 19-20 cm wrist → size 20-21 cm
  • 20-21 cm wrist → size 21-22 cm
  • Over 21 cm → add 1-2 cm to the measured circumference

What to do if you're between two sizes

If your wrist is 18.5 cm, you're between size 19 and size 20. How do you choose?

If the bracelet is rigid: choose the larger size (20). A rigid bracelet doesn't adapt, doesn't stretch. If it's too tight, you won't be able to put it on.

If the bracelet is soft or has a clasp: choose the smaller size (19). A soft bracelet has more leeway. If it fits snugly, you'll still be able to wear it. If instead it's too big, it will slide.

FAQ

Q: Can I have a rigid bracelet enlarged if it turns out too tight?

A: If it's titanium, it's possible but complex. If it's gold, it's even harder. We don't recommend attempting a DIY fix. If the bracelet is too tight, it's best to request a replacement in the right size.

Q: Does the bracelet loosen with use?

A: No. Neither titanium nor gold deforms with everyday use. The size stays stable for years. It's more likely that the wrist changes slightly, due to weight gain/loss or swelling from heat.

Q: Which measuring method is more accurate?

A: The tailor's tape measure is slightly more accurate, because it doesn't require the intermediate step of marking the string. But if you don't have one, the string method is just as valid if done carefully.

Q: Can I measure a bracelet I already own?

A: Yes. If you have a bracelet you wear comfortably every day, measure it and make sure the model is similar to be sure you're ordering the correct size. For a new bracelet with the same comfort, order the same size.
