How to Choose the Right Men's Bracelet Size: A Practical Guide

How to measure your wrist to choose the right men's bracelet size. Practical guide with DIY method, size chart, and tips to avoid mistakes when buying online.

Mistaking the bracelet size is the primary fear for online shoppers. A bracelet that's too tight is uncomfortable. A bracelet that's too loose slips off. The right size should be a balance between security and movement.

The good news: accurately measuring your wrist only requires a string and a ruler. Nothing complicated.

How to measure your wrist

There are two methods, both leading to the same result.

Method 1: The String

Take a cotton string or a piece of yarn. Wrap the string around your wrist at the point where you usually wear bracelets. Not too tight; the string should touch the skin but not press into it. Mark the point where the string overlaps itself with a pen.

Now, lay the string flat against a ruler and measure it. That's your wrist circumference. Jot it down.

Method 2: Tailor's Tape Measure

If you have a tailor's tape measure at home, it's even simpler. Wrap it around your wrist at the same point and read the number. That's the circumference.

Where exactly to measure

Always above the prominent wrist bone, the one you feel when you move your fist up and down. This is where the bracelet will rest.

From wrist measurement to bracelet size

Once you know your wrist circumference, add some allowance for movement.

If your wrist measures 17 cm: add 1-2 cm for a comfortable yet secure fit. The size to order is 18-19 cm. If you prefer a looser fit, add 2-3 cm; the size would be 19-20 cm.

The general rule: not adding extra centimeters increases the risk of the bracelet being just right, meaning too tight, as your wrist is always moving. More than 3 cm means a risk of it slipping off.

The difference between rigid and soft bracelets in size selection

A rigid bracelet follows a different logic.

You cannot slide it on from the bottom of your hand like an elastic bracelet. You have to pass it over the back of your hand, which means your hand needs to slip through. This requires more space.

If your wrist is 17 cm, but your hand has a wider back (say 8-9 cm wide), the rigid bracelet must be large enough for your hand to pass through. Add 2-3 cm to the wrist measurement, not 1-2 cm.

A soft bracelet, on the other hand, has more tolerance. If it has a clasp or is elastic, the wrist measurement + 1 cm is generally sufficient.

Men's bracelet size chart (approximate)

Wrist circumference → recommended size:

  • 16-17 cm wrist → size 17-18 cm
  • 17-18 cm wrist → size 18-19 cm
  • 18-19 cm wrist → size 19-20 cm
  • 19-20 cm wrist → size 20-21 cm
  • 20-21 cm wrist → size 21-22 cm
  • Over 21 cm → add 1-2 cm to the measured circumference

What to do if you are between two sizes

If your wrist is 18.5 cm, you are between size 19 and size 20. How do you choose?

If the bracelet is rigid: choose the larger size (20). A rigid bracelet does not adapt; it doesn't stretch. If it's too tight, you won't be able to put it on.

If the bracelet is soft or has a clasp: choose the smaller size (19). A soft bracelet has more room for maneuver. If it fits snugly, you can still wear it. If, however, it's too large, it will slip off.

FAQ

Q: Can I enlarge a rigid bracelet if it's too tight?

A: If it's titanium, it's possible but complex. If it's gold, it's even more difficult. We don't recommend attempting a DIY solution. If the bracelet is too tight, it's better to request a replacement with the correct size.

Q: Does the bracelet loosen with wear?

R: No. Neither titanium nor gold deforms with daily use. The size remains stable for years. It's more likely for the wrist to change slightly due to weight gain/loss or swelling from heat.

Q: Which measurement method is more accurate?

R: A tailor's tape measure is slightly more accurate because it doesn't require the intermediate step of marking the string. But if you don't have one, the string method is just as valid if done carefully.

Q: Can I measure a bracelet I already own?

R: Yes. If you have a bracelet that you wear comfortably every day, measure it and ensure the style is similar to be certain of ordering the correct size. For a new bracelet with the same comfort, order the same size.
